Special Olympian Going for Gold
July 2010

Barrington’s lifelong resident, Cody Bruner, will be representing the State of New Jersey in the 2010 Special Olympics for Soccer this July in Lincoln, Nebraska. Cody is a student at Kingsway High School located in Moorestown. Cody and his parents, Sue and Barry Bruner are very excited. This is the third year that Cody has participated in the annual event. Previous years Cody has been a part of the baseball, floor hockey and basketball. We all hope that Cody and his fellow teammates can BRING HOME THE GOLD!

June 2010

Dear Residents:

With a long winter behind us, we can look forward to a beautiful spring and summer.

On May 12th, we continued our Youth Government Day program with the 8 th grade students from all our schools. The students learned about local government and assisted with running our council meeting. What a great group of students, who actively participated and provided us with great input and ideas. Barrington Day was another great success, with beautiful weather to support our annual event. Thanks to all who volunteered their time in making it a great day!!

Some upcoming events in town:

•  Memorial Day Service, Monday May 31 st . The Barrington Band starts us off with patriotic music at 9:30am, followed by our service at 10:00am. Please join us in honoring our Veterans for their service to our country.

•  4 th of July Festivities: Our parade and fireworks will be held on Friday, July 2 nd. The parade will start at 6:30pm, with fireworks to follow at dusk. With the 4 th of July on a Sunday this year, we decided to hold the parade again on a Friday night. Our plan is to switch the parade back to our tradition on the 4 th next year, when the 4 th is on a Monday .

•  We are in the planning stages to hold a Shredding event. Residents will be able to bring personal documents and files to be shredded. More information to follow.

On the service side, the Borough's trash and recycling contract expires in July. We have partnered with the Borough of Somerdale in bidding these services, in hope that we will be able to save money. In regards to sharing services to reduce costs, we have provided a list of services the Borough currently shares with our neighboring communities. Please look inside this issue of the Communiqué. On our website, please look for my “Mayor's Corner” page where I plan to post various news topics, proclamations, happenings in town, etc., to keep you up-to-date on various topics and news in town. This month the Borough entered into a contract with a new energy supplier, saving approximately 21.8% on our electrical supply costs. The Borough now has an official Facebook page. If you are a Facebook user, please become a fan. We plan to use this as another source to provide update information and events in town.

We soon will begin our 2010 road projects. Our road project this year will concentrate on completing permanent paving repairs to the numerous potholes resulting from the harsh winter we had. Some areas that we will be addressing include Commerce/Shreve; Reading Ave, between 3 rd and 4 th Ave, Thomas/Dubois; Kent/Highland; Barr/Clements Bridge; Woodland School; 5 th /Moore; Austin, near intersection with 4 th Ave. Thanks to a recent grant from the State DOT, we will be able to repave Chesterfield Road from Nassau Drive to past the intersection with Tavistock Blvd. Once we get closer to the construction our Engineer will contact those residents who will be affected by the work .

As always, I want to extend my congratulations to all our graduating eighth and twelfth graders. Best of luck in your future endeavors, whether it be high school, college or work.

Wishing everyone and safe and wonderful summer!!

Mayor

Thank-You First Colonial Bank!

I want to thank First Colonial Bank for their generous donation of $20,000 to the Borough of Barrington to support the 4th of July Fireworks and the Barrington Harvest Festival. In these extremely difficult economic times, municipalities are looking for any way to save tax dollars while still being able to provide services. First Colonial Bank's contribution will enable Barrington to continue with our annual July 4th and Harvest Festival celebrations. -June 2010

New Shared Service Contract

We are happy to announce a new shared service contract that we entered into with the Borough of Somerdale. Both Barrington's and Somerdale's trash pick-up contracts were expiring at the same time, so we joined together to see if our combined contract could potentially save money. When bids were received, the prices were dramatically lower than we are currently paying. It currently costs the Borough $51.40 a ton to haul away our trash. The new price will be $45.00 a ton. With this new price, our savings will be over $15,000 annually. This is just another way we continue to look at every item in our budget to see where we can save money, and continue to provide good service. -June 2010
