Backyard Chicken Permit

Barrington’s Clerk’s Office oversees the issuing of backyard chicken permits.

PROCEDURES TO APPLY FOR A CHICKEN PERMIT

  1. Applicant must first get zoning approval for the coop.  A copy of the zoning application is provided here.  The fee for a zoning review is $40.00.  Once zoning has been approved, you can then apply for a chicken permit.  The 2021 residential zoning officer is Brian Kelly and his email address is bkelly@barringtonboro.com in case you have any questions.
  • Once your application is approved, a permit will be issued.  The permit is good for one year and has to be renewed annually.  Your coop will be inspected by the health officer two times per year to make sure it is in good order.
  • You can renew annually but do not have to do anything with zoning again.  Just the $10.00 fee for the chicken permit and a renewal application is all that is needed.

The 2015 chicken ordinance can be reviewed here Please familiarize yourself with this ordinance as it spells out all of the requirements for the keeping of backyard chickens.
